Kenora in brief

Kenora faces Lake of the Woods and talks about the lake the way other towns talk about a main street. Visit Kenora sells boating, fishing, beaches, and winter ice the same week the City posts fire-ban alerts for the northwest. The municipal land acknowledgment places the city on Treaty #3 Anishinaabe territory and names Wauzhushk Onigum, Niisaachewan, and Washagamis Bay First Nations. Tourism Kenora's line is still "neck of the woods," and the Lake of the Woods Discovery Centre on Lakeview Drive is where visitors get maps, Science North exhibits, and the outboard motor collection upstairs.

Harbourfront life sets the calendar. Winkler Harbourfront Park holds the Thistle Pavilion in summer. The Jarnel Contracting Pavilion hosts the Wednesday Matiowski Farmers' Market. Shake the Lake takes the August long weekend, Kenora Bass International fills three days of fishing, and Coney Island Music Festival turns a boat-access beach into a free stage day. McLeod Park keeps the postcard stops: Husky the Muskie across from the James McMillan Tugboat, with Loonie Bear and the Rotary Goodwill Geyser along the harbour for the obligatory photos.

Locals check the harbourfront camera when they are away and still ask whether you got your Husky shot when you visit. The Muse carries Truth and Reconciliation programming that the tourism calendar flags each September. Winter still sells skating, snowshoeing, and ice fishing once the summer harbour calendar closes. On OpenStats City Score for 2026, Kenora sits at rank 69 of 125. The hometown framing stays Lake of the Woods and the harbour first.

Connectivity · OpenStats

OpenStats Broadband Download Speeds

OpenStats

Cities ranked by estimated best advertised download (Mbps). Anchored to the current ISED National Broadband Data vintage, then backcast along a national speed curve with city-specific fiber-arrival and 50/10 availability paths so relative ranks can change over the decade. Not a claim of audited historical hex maps for every year.

OpenStats Building Permit Value

OpenStats

OpenStats City Score

OpenStats

Dimensional average of OpenStats open-data pillars for each panel year 2016–2025: tax, construction, connectivity, indoor air, water, seismic hazard, population growth, and crime severity. Each series is scored 0–1 within its edition; series in the same pillar are averaged, then all eight pillars are averaged with equal weight. Missing pillars score at median standing (0.5). Growth and CSI use StatCan annual tables; permits, mill rates, and broadband use live rows plus documented year-varying estimates where needed. Radon, water, and PGA may be survey/model vintages carried forward and are flagged when static for more than two years. External commercial livability lists are never inputs.
