Wetaskiwin in brief

Wetaskiwin introduces itself with a Cree name the city translates as the hills where peace was made, and the municipal about page still tells the Buffalo Child and Little Bear pipe story that sits behind Peace Hills. Railway memory is almost as stubborn: Siding 16 on the Calgary and Edmonton line became Wetaskiwin at Father Lacombe's suggestion, then a town in 1902 and a city in 1906. Historic Downtown keeps that age visible with restored facades, murals, interpretive signs, and the Wetaskiwin and District Heritage Museum on the walk.

Recreation has clear hometown addresses. The Manluk Centre: Wetaskiwin Regional Aquatics & Fitness is the swim-and-gym flagship, while Manluk Theatre keeps stage nights in the local entertainment rotation. By-the-Lake Park wraps a constructed lake with a 2.5 kilometre paved trail and the Bark Park; Ashoro Friendship Park marks the sister-city link with Ashoro, Japan; Diamond Jubilee Park puts amphitheatre and cenotaph on the approach to downtown; Montgomery Park grows an Edible Urban Forest.

The Pipestone Flyer and Wetaskiwin Times share the print beat, and city messaging leans on a WE / WIN slogan that fits a place proud of small-city continuity. Taste of Wetaskiwin and Welcoming Week sit on the civic calendar beside Ride to Reynolds outing days, and NASCAR weekends at Edmonton International Raceway still put Wetaskiwin on regional sports fronts. Curbside recycling is the practical 2026 rollout story. The OpenStats City Score ranks Wetaskiwin 57 of 125 in 2026. The hometown tell is Peace Hills language, Manluk pool steam, and a main street that still looks like it remembers Siding 16.

OpenStats Broadband Download Speeds

OpenStats

Cities ranked by estimated best advertised download (Mbps). OpenStats City Score

OpenStats

Dimensional average of OpenStats open-data pillars for each panel year 2016–2025: tax, construction, connectivity, indoor air, water, seismic hazard, population growth, and crime severity. Each series is scored 0–1 within its edition; series in the same pillar are averaged, then all eight pillars are averaged with equal weight. Missing pillars score at median standing (0.5). Growth and CSI use StatCan annual tables; permits, mill rates, and broadband use live rows plus documented year-varying estimates where needed. Radon, water, and PGA may be survey/model vintages carried forward and are flagged when static for more than two years. External commercial livability lists are never inputs.
